Overview

Haven was built in UE5 with in-house assets and tools as a settlement prototype. The target of this prototype was to have a medium-scaled map that could double as both a settlement and an enemy encounter zone. Utilizing framing techniques, Haven's aesthetics are cemented around a prominent derelict ship on the coast.

This settlement first features as a nighttime insertion to bypass a guarded front entrance, then as a liberated town after the encounter. After completion of this event, the town is opened up as a standard settlement.

Theme

The Haven is a picturesque and romantic settlement juxtaposed with the ruins of a ship, this interiors of which have been co-opted as part of the town. Whether Haven was conceived before or after the crash is uncertain, but the ship remains a critical centerpiece of Haven.

Layout

Framing the giant ship was difficult, but use of its scale was able to make Haven iconic in that manner. Multiple tiers of terrain separate the visually distinct quarters of the town.

Encounter Design

The enemy encounter begins as the player exits a hidden cave that leads onto a rooftop of one such building inset into the cliffside, overlooking a well-framed visual of the settlement. Multiple pathways are provided throughout the town and large-scale areas are ready hosts to combat engagements.
